Captain Marvel is an extraterrestrial Kree warrior who finds herself caught in the middle of an intergalactic battle between her people and the Skrulls. Living on Earth in 1995, she keeps having recurring memories of another life as U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers. With help from Nick Fury, Captain Marvel tries to uncover the secrets of her past while harnessing her special superpowers to end the war with the evil Skrulls.

After what happened at the end of Avengers: Infinity War (2018)Captain Marvel is the next Marvel Studio film that I would like to watch. I think that’s what everybody has been thinking of. After all, everyone knows that Captain Marvel is very powerful. She is like the Superman of Marvel Universe. After all these years, people are wondering the whereabouts of Captain Marvel. We all hope that we will know the answer in this film.

Carol Danvers: You have three names. What do people call you?
Nick Fury: Fury.
Carol Danvers: Just Fury?
Nick Fury: Yep. Not Nicholas. Not Joseph. Just Fury.
Carol Danvers: What does your mother call you then?
Nick Fury: Fury.
Carol Danvers: What do your friends call you?
Nick Fury: Fury.
Carol Danvers: Kids?
Nick Fury: If I ever have them? Fury.

I do not go straight to the theatre to watch Captain Marvel on the day it was released in Indonesia. However, I have heard several rumours that the film was not good. It is boring. A statement which definitely made my expectations for this film quite average. However, after watching the film, I don’t know why people said that the film is boring because, to me, Captain Marvel is not that bad. It is actually rather good.

The first time I heard Brie Larson was cast as Captain Marvel, I didn’t know whether I was happy or disappointed. I mean, it was amazing that an Oscar-winning actress played superheroes films. I am sure her acting skill is brilliant because she has won an Oscar. However, that does not mean she will be suitable for the role. Some people even compare Brie Larson to Gal Gadot who plays Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)Wonder Woman (2017), and Justice League (2017). Well, I think it is unfair to compare both of them. Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman are two different characters with different superpowers. Which made me get back at Brie Larson. After watching the film, I think she really suits the role very much. How she brought up the emotion and did the fighting scenes, I am very sure she really worked hard for it.

When I saw the trailer, I was also very excited to see Jude Law in it. After playing the young Professor Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018), I cannot wait to see him playing in another role in another huge franchise film. However, nobody knows what role does Jude Law play. I will not spoil it here either because if I said it, it would spoil the film for those who haven’t watched the film. I know Captain Marvel has been playing in the theatre for quite some time now and I pretty sure most of you have watched it. But just in case some haven’t, I will not tell you anything about Jude Law’s character except that he has played his character really well.

Samuel L. Jackson is back as Nick Fury. In this Captain Marvel film, Nick Fury looks pretty young and both of his eyes are normal. He still hasn’t used his eye patch. All the fans are curious about it because from the very beginning we saw Nick Fury, he already uses his eye patch. Therefore, to see him without it is something new. We rather hope that they would have a good explanation about why Nick Fury has to wear one. Nick Fury is funnier in this film than in all the other Marvel films. I think because he is younger, so his bringing is still very chill. As he grew older, he became more and more serious. I like the younger Nick Fury. He made a good friend with Captain Marvel. I don’t think I have to explain his acting skills, because, after all this year, Samuel L. Jackson knows how to become Nick Fury without having to be explained anymore.

Starting off with a lovely tribute to the late Stan Lee—which made me choke a little bit—Captain Marvel is packed with action, humour, and thrilling visual. In the middle of the story, the filmmakers managed to slip some action, thus making the story, not a bit of boring. Sure there are a lot of talks, but there are also a lot of actions. Since this is Captain Marvel’s first film, they need time to explain her history. I am pretty sure that the film is different from the comic book, but since I don’t read the comic book, I cannot compare. However, from what I watched in the film, Captain Marvel is a good and enjoyable film. Basically, Captain Marvel serves as a prequel to the rest of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is the first female-led superhero film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We don’t get many female superheroes in Marvel, so it is very exciting to see one.

The chemistry between the characters is great and natural. The action sequences are thrilling. The story is somewhat fitting. I like the 1990s settings. From the places, the clothes, the music, everything just fits in. Goose, the cat, really has gotten more attention from the audiences that it should be. But, what can we say? He is indeed adorable.

Of course, like all other Marvel films, CGI effect is a no stranger in this film as well. As always, the filmmakers did a very good job of editing the film. Everything is synchronised perfectly with the action sequences. Thus making the whole film more exciting and thrilling. So overall, I really like Captain Marvel. I don’t understand why many people said it was a boring film because, to me, it wasn’t. It is rather exciting and enjoyable. I like the fact that they don’t show Captain Marvel as some superhero that so powerful that she is unbeatable. I like that the filmmakers made Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel is an admirable person, with good friends and goals worth fighting for. This made her character more relatable to the audiences.

Like any other Marvel films, you should wait until mid-post credit and post credit. I especially like the mid-post credit scene. I just cannot wait to see Avengers: Endgame this April. If you want to watch Avengers: Endgame later, I suggest you watch Captain Marvel first.

I give Captain Marvel 8 out of 10 stars.
