Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet—the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artefacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment.

One word for Avengers: Infinity War, magnificent. I have seen every Marvel films starting from Iron Man (2008), until the last one Black Panther (2018) and never before I have seen something like this. Not even the previous two Avengers film. It’s been 10 years since Marvel Cinematic Universe created a new point of view of superheroes films and their 19th film has really made a Bang. I mean, seriously, this film is massive. Only a week this film has set many new records. For starters, Avengers: Infinity War has become one of the most expensive films ever made. Avengers: Infinity War is the highest-grossing film in 2018, the highest-grossing superhero film, and the fastest film in history to reach a worldwide gross of $1 billion, doing so in 11 days. It’s not surprising seeing how many positive reviews that this film has received. Not to mention, all the tickets in theatres are always fully booked. No wonder this film has set a new record for the highest-grossing during its opening weekend. I guess that explains a lot about this film, no?

So, let’s talk about the film. If you are worried about any spoiler, don’t worry. I tried my very best not to spoil anything. I support the campaign of ‘Thanos demands your silence about Infinity War’, because I myself, don’t like being spoiled either. So hopefully, my review doesn’t spoil anything.

After spending 18 films before, finally, we arrived at this film where the major enemy of all time has finally step in. If you follow all Marvel Cinematic Universe films, you must all know that many characters in the film stated how powerful Thanos is. We have seen a bit of him from some post-credit scenes in several films, like The Avengers (2012) or heard of him from his stepdaughter, Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017). We knew he was after the Infinity Stones that has been spread all over the universe, but we just didn’t know why exactly. Now, in Avengers: Infinity War, we can see Thanos in action and the reason why he wanted all the Infinity Stones.

Before we jumped to the cast or the film itself, let’s talk about the Infinity Stones first. There are six Infinity Stones. Before Avengers: Infinity War, we have only seen five of them and hopefully, we will see the sixth one in this film. Since Thanos is after all of the stones, it’s just doesn’t make sense if the sixth stone doesn’t come out in this film. At least, I find it as doesn’t make sense. The first stone is Space Stone or Tesseract (blue), which was first shown in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and in The Avengers. The second stone is Mind Stone within Loki’s Scepter (yellow) in The Avengers and with Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). The third stone is Reality Stone or Aether (red), which showed up in Thor: The Dark World (2013). The fourth stone is Power Stone or Orb (purple), which showed up in Guardians of the Galaxy. The fifth stone is Time Stone or Eye of Agamotto (green), which showed up in Doctor Strange (2016). Now, the sixth stone is Soul Stone (orange) in which the whereabouts is still unknown. I only knew the name and the colour of the sixth stone from a friend of mine who has read the comic book. Each stone is powerful, so imagine what would happen if Thanos got all of them. Of course, the answer is catastrophe. The end of the world. That’s why people all over the world are so excited about Avengers: Infinity War.

When I said Murder on the Orient Express (2017) is a galaxy of stars film, I was being modest. Truly. When you watched Avengers: Infinity War, Murder on the Orient Express seems nothing close. I mean, don’t get me wrong. With huge actors and actresses like Johnny Depp, Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz, Michelle Pfeifer and more, Murder on the Orient Express is still a star-studded film. However, this is Avenger: Infinity War we’re talking about. Even the smallest characters in the films were portrayed by huge actors. After 18 superheroes films from Marvel, we finally came to this moment. Finally, I got to see my favourite superheroes and some of my favourite actors in one film. This is rarely happening, so I am pretty excited. As you all well know, I love Iron Man and the actor playing it, Robert Downey Jr. I also love Benedict Cumberbatch who now played the role of Doctor Stephen Strange. I also like Tom Holland who now played as Spider-Man. Even with all of her makeup as Gamora, Zoë Saldana still as cool as ever. I wasn’t too fond of Thor before but you have to admit that Chris Hemsworth is bloody hot. Now that Thor has a lot of sense of humour and his hair was cut, he is surely has become so much handsome.

Technically, Loki is not a hero. He is more of a villain or anti-hero rather than a hero. But I really like him, despite the character was played by one of my huge favourite actors, Tom Hiddleston. Loki is very funny and unpredictable. Yes, he is cunning and witty, but I like how he’s unpredictable and very very funny. He’s a lot funnier than Thor even from the start. He likes to lie and cheat. Still, that doesn’t change the fact how the hell Loki is nowhere to be seen in any of the film’s posters. Even Nebula got one. So yeah, I am pissed. I really really love Loki. If you asked me, who’s my favourite villain of all time, I will definitely say Loki then afterwards Darth Vader and Magneto. Loki is a very interesting character. I was so disappointed that I didn’t see him on the poster and it got me nervous when I went to watch the film. I kept wondering myself, what happened to Loki. Is he dead? Or is he betraying his brother again? Or what. In the end, my curiosity and nervousness were answered. I won’t say how do I feel because it will spoil the film. Let’s just say I’m in a mixture of feeling. But I am so happy to see Tom Hiddleston. His portrayal of Loki is just spot on. I could never imagine other actors played the role nor imagine Tom Hiddleston as Thor because he just perfectly fit as Loki. Not because of his personality, but his acting is just so so good.

Of course, not only Tom Hiddleston, the other actors also portrayed their characters really well. Somehow Robert Downey Jr. knew how to play the arrogant Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man. He has been Iron Man for ten years and the role has stuck with him. Although not as long as Hugh Jackman who has portrayed Wolverine for the last 17 years, still Robert Downey Jr. has become Iron Man for the last ten years. He is still doing absolutely great. I also think no one can pull off Thor’s character better than Chris Hemsworth. It’s been 7 years since the first Thor film and Chris Hemsworth is still going strong. I heard rumours that he’s going to hang his cloak soon but I hope soon doesn’t mean too soon, because I believe—along with other Thor fans—aren’t ready to say goodbye to him either. It’s still unfortunate that we won’t see his Mjölnir again, but new Thor is kind of hot with his new haircut and new power.

Speaking of Chris, it’s interesting that we have three Chris in the film. We have Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, and Chris Pratt as Peter Quill. I like all the three Chris. Each of them has their own charm but if I have to choose, I like Chris Hemsworth the best. However, the other two Chris are also great. Chris Evans fit the role of Captain America, though Captain America is not my favourite superhero just because he is too stiff. While Chris Pratt as Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord is as funny as ever. Each Chris suited their own role and if you switched their role, I don’t think it would fit as perfect as now. They would do great, but I think the role they were portraying right now were the roles that best suited them.

Being someone who is very smart and a little bit arrogant is not a new thing for Benedict Cumberbatch. He has played Sherlock Holmes in the TV series Sherlock and Khan Noonien Singh in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013). Nevertheless, Benedict Cumberbatch still is very charming and attractive as Doctor Stephen Strange. We won’t feel bored with his performance at all, even though he’s playing a character that has similar personality with his previous roles. Benedict Cumberbatch is indeed the perfect actor to portray the role of Doctor Stephen Strange.

Peter Parker: I’m Peter, by the way.
Dr. Stephen Strange: Dr. Strange.
Peter Parker: Oh, we’re using our made-up names. Um… I’m Spider-Man, then.

I also like the idea of Tom Holland playing the new Spider-Man. Somehow, with his young age, Tom Holland is able to bring the 15 years old Peter Parker into life. His young age made him perfect for the role. He knew exactly how to make a high schooler has the time of his life when receiving new superheroes and joining the Avengers. He really got the anxiety of a teenager, unlike any other actors who have played Spider-Man. Don’t get me wrong. I like Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. His chemistry with Emma Stone was just right. However, Tom Holland seemed more suited. It’s like the character was made for him. In this Avengers: Infinity War, Tom Holland reprise his role for the third time as Spider-Man and he’s doing great. I hope they would make a sequel of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), but we’ll see about that.

Anyway, with so many top actors and actresses, I don’t think I can talk about them one by one but let me tell you, they were so so great. Each of them portrayed their character really well. Not exactly like the first time we saw them in their first film, but like life, all the characters grew and change. It’s so awesome to see all of them together. Black Panther is one of the superheroes most anticipated since the film was a huge success. Everyone seems to be talking about it and kind of loving it. After all, the film made so many records and inspired so many people. Their iconic greetings move seemed to be getting more and more popular right now. Well, it is indeed iconic. No wonder people kept talking about it until now. Wakanda forever!

It’s just amazing how Avengers: Infinity War is filled with huge actors. I mean, come on. Do you have any other films that crossed your mind that filled with huge actors at once? To be honest, I can’t think of a film. Even Murder on the Orient Express can’t beat the number of huge actors and actresses in Avengers: Infinity War. This film is surely massive. Not just the cast, but the overall story. After all, this film is about combining all superheroes at once. Back then, there is only one superhero in one film. Well, two or three at most. Even the second or the third superheroes wouldn’t be playing too many parts of the story as the main superhero. However, nowadays, as Marvel grew stronger and bigger, you get to see up to 24 superheroes in one film. Isn’t that kind of massive?

The story of Avengers: Infinity War starts off with the continuation of Thor: Ragnarok (2017). We will find out whose ship that Thor and Loki saw that day. If you have watched Thor: Ragnarok, you’ll know what I mean, but if you haven’t, I suggest you watch it first. Since Avengers: Infinity War is about all of Marvel superheroes, I also suggest that you watch the other films first to know about the infinity stones and who the hell is Thanos and what’s the story of each superhero in the film. Well, you can still enjoy the film very much without watching all other 18 films, but in my personal opinion, if you have watched the other films beforehand, you will get a better understanding of the whole Avengers: Infinity War film.

When we are talking about Avengers film, we can’t not talk about the action sequences along with the whole story. Let me tell you, Avengers: Infinity War has the whole package. The story was great, the action sequences were great, even the jokes were funny. Not as much as Thor: Ragnarok (2017), but still just the right amount to make us laugh and smile. I don’t want to sound harsh like nearly every people, but you just can’t compare Justice League (2017) with Avengers: Infinity War. You just can’t. First, because they are from a different world, a different universe. Second, Steppenwolf is nothing compared to Thanos. Well, perhaps Superman can fight face to face but I don’t know. Well, for sure, Superman is far stronger than Steppenwolf anyway. Third, the amount of heroes in Justice League is nothing compared to Avengers: Infinity War. Perhaps Last but not least, the story. Seriously. Avengers: Infinity War has a more complicated yet more clear and more exciting and interesting than Justice League. The background story of Thanos is more clear than Steppenwolf. I knew I sound harsh, but it’s the truth.

However, the big question for Thanos is, why now? After all this time, why now? If he’s so powerful, why he just went out now? Instead, let’s say from the beginning. Of course, I know if it’s from the beginning, there won’t be a story of Avengers or any other superheroes. Of course, there are several theories but I like one theory above all. It does sound make sense among all other theories. The theory is because the three most powerful people in the Marvel Universe has died and therefore Thanos decided to attack now. I won’t say more who are those three people because it would absolutely spoil the other Marvel films. Therefore, let’s just leave it at that. And I think that’s the most possible theory of all.

Dr. Stephen Strange: Okay, let me ask you this, one time: What master do you serve?
Peter Quill: Oh, what master do I serve? What am I supposed to say, Jesus?

Marvel films are no stranger with CGI. After all, everything was being put with CGI. With today’s technology, everything is possible to realise. Any idea is possible to come true. That is why filmmakers need to work extra hard to make the CGI effect become as flawless as the real thing. Of course, no man is perfect because sometimes we can see where things were being computerised or not. However, sometimes the audiences will close their one eye and just enjoy the film without concerning the effect. Unless the CGI effect was so bad and the story wasn’t that good, the audiences wouldn’t mind at all. However, I think Avengers: Infinity War has a very good CGI effect. The film editors really made sure that every effect in the film is perfect and on point. Therefore, as an audience, we would enjoy the overall story. All the CGI effect really support the overall film.

It’s no secret that many people will die in this film because of Thanos. We just don’t know who is that person and how they were killed. I was so sad with a couple of deaths in this film and hoping somehow the filmmakers will undo the deaths or at least gave us a chance to see those characters back in the fourth film. However, I was kind of disappointed with the ending. With all the exciting and thrilling moments and fightings, Avengers: Infinity War surely got us excited since in the early of the film. But then, the ending is kind of disappointing. Not because it’s too simple or too easy, but it’s because too predictable. Not predictable as in I know how the superheroes were going to be killed or who are the superheroes whose going to die but as in I knew what would happen in the next film. All the filmmakers asked the audience not to spoil anything about the film but somehow, they have actually spoiled it way before the film was released. Therefore, the ending pissed a lot of people, including me. As I said, not because the anti-climax is too easy, but it’s too predictable and annoying beyond measure. Because somehow I knew and I believe a lot of people knew, what would at least happen in the next film. We don’t know how, we just know it would happen somehow.

Okoye: When you said you were going to open Wakanda to the rest of the world, this is not what I imagined.
T’Challa: What did you imagine?
Okoye: The Olympics, maybe even a Starbucks.

The soundtrack of Avengers: Infinity War, well, still very ‘Marvelly’ as always but nothing really as memorable as I can remember. They are still very good, just not something that I would love to hear all the time. Most of the songs were just old songs being remade with new beats and all. Unlike when I heard Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song in Thor: Ragnarok. That song so memorable that up until now, I can still remember it. Anyway, the soundtrack songs still made the scenes lived up. They were put in the right moment and made the scenes more exciting, more intriguing, and even sadder.

Before I start to give spoilers of the film, let’s end my review of Avengers: Infinity War here. All in all, Avengers: Infinity War is a very good film. The action, the fighting, the story, the humour, the sad part, this film has it all. No wonder it achieves so many new records in just a few weeks. Avengers: Infinity War is definitely worth to watch. In regular theatres, in 3D, or even in IMAX theatres. I even don’t mind to watch the film twice or thrice, because the film is definitely worth it. It’s so fun, enjoyable, and exciting. I know the ending is quite disappointing, but as overall, Avengers: Infinity War is pretty much a great film. If you haven’t watched the film already, I suggest you go to the nearest theatre now and but the ticket. Trust me, it will be worth it even if you have to watch it alone.

I give Avengers: Infinity War 9 out of 10 stars.
