Yoo Si-Jin (Song Joong-Ki) is the captain of a South Korean Special Forces unit. He catches a motorcycle thief Kim Gi-Beom (Kim Min-Seok) with Sergeant Major Seo Dae-Young (Jin Goo). The thief is injured during his capture and is sent to the hospital. Dae-young realises his cell phone was stolen by the thief and goes to the hospital along with Si-Jin to retrieve his cell phone.

In the emergency room, Si-jin meets Dr Kang Mo-Yeon (Song Hye-Kyo) for the first time. He falls in love with her immediately. Mo-Yeon mistakenly assumes Si-Jin is part of thief’s criminal gang due to his nickname “Big Boss”, which is actually his callsign. He proves to her that he is a soldier with the help of army doctor Yoon Myeong-Joo (Kim Ji-Won).

Si-jin and Mo-Yeon begin to date, but due to their jobs, their dates don’t go well. Si-jin takes an order to lead his soldiers on a peacekeeping mission to the fictional country of Uruk. Meanwhile, Mo-Yeon is upset because she failed to become a professor due to a colleague’s privileged background. When Si-jin and Mo-Yeon meet again, they talk about their views on life and realise how different they are. Si-jin, as a soldier, kills to protect lives and Mo-Yeon, as a doctor, tries to save lives. They say their goodbyes. Dae-young, on the other hand, faces a dilemma on whether to continue with his relationship with Myeong-Joo or risk being removed from the army by Myeong-Joo’s father, Lieutenant General Yoon.

Eight months later, Mo-Yeon rebuffs the sexual advances of hospital chairman Han Suk-won (Tae In-ho) and as a result, is assigned to lead a medical team to Uruk. There, Si-jin and Mo-Yeon meet and fall in love again. Through their encounters in Uruk—an earthquake and an epidemic—their love for each other grows stronger. While in Uruk, Mo-Yeon accidentally confesses her feelings and the two officially started dating, much to the amusement of their respective teams.

After waiting Descendants of the Sun to end, I finally can watch it. I was waiting for it to end because I wanted to watch in a marathon. With all the hypes happening surrounds this drama, my expectation is so high. And I have to say, this drama is not disappointing at all. It’s romantic, thrilling, and funny. I really really love it! So let’s talk about the drama.

Song Joong-Ki has officially become one of my favourite actors! Seriously, Descendants of the Sun succeed 80% because of Joong-Ki and the rest because of the script and Song Hye-Kyo. Joong-Ki is so handsome! He’s a perfect example of a handsome cute and baby face guy. His character as Yoo Si-Jin is perfect. Si-Jin is just too perfect. He is so cool, charismatic, funny, handsome, smart, athletic, anything you can name from a guy, he has it. Not to mention he is a soldier who protects the country. No wonder all the girls seem to melt every time they see him. He is just too handsome, too good to be true. I don’t think I can point another actor to play Si-Jin’s character. I think Joong-Ki is the perfect guy to be Si-Jin. Even Song Hye-Kyo also thought so. I can’t imagine anyone else played the character of Si-Jin other than Joong-Ki. He’s just the perfect guy. Yep, Joong-Ki is a real deal. I have known him from a reality show called Running Man. My sister is such a huge fan of that reality show and I sometimes come and join to watch it. It is very funny. It’s pretty sad that Joong-Ki is no longer part of the team. Anyway, Descendants of the Sun really has made his name rises again, especially after his mandatory military service. In this drama, Song Joong-Ki’s acting skill is so perfect and so stunning that no wonder everyone is amazed by him. His charisma really radiates that everyone will definitely fall in love with his character. Song Joong-Ki proves us that he is not just about handsome face but also a talented actor. His acting skill was perfect and all the stunts that he has to do in the series all look amazing. He can change from a serious captain soldier with authority to a friendly person who loves to joke. Joong-Ki can change his character’s facial expression very quickly, adjusting to every situation he was in. Not only he can look so cool and charismatic, he is also not afraid of looking silly either, that’s why he’s so great.

“The person who has seen more deaths than the soldiers is the doctor who hold the knife.” – Kang Mo-Yeon

As for Song Hye-Kyo, she is as beautiful as ever. Seriously, everything about her is flawless. Her eyes, her eyebrows, her mouth, her teeth, her laugh, her smile, her skin. Everything! Not to mention her acting is also great. We can feel her emotions throughout the series. Whether she’s being funny or sad or angry or even happy, we can absolutely see it on her face. Her facial expression is so spot on. She can do serious, sad, and even ridiculous just right. She’s not afraid of looking silly either. It’s no secret that Song Hye-Kyo is a great actress. Anyone who thinks otherwise should probably recheck themselves. Not only she is beautiful, but Song Hye-Kyo is also a talented and a great actress. Song Hye-Kyo managed to portray a beautiful and cute Dr Kang Mo-Yeon. The chemistry between her character, Mo-Yeon and Joong-Ki’s character, Si-Jin is so real. They both have done a great job of playing their roles. I am not surprised if I found out they are dating in real life because well, their chemistry is so good, so perfect, and so real.

I can’t believe I’ve finished watching Descendants of the Sun in just two days. Even less, I think. The story itself is actually pretty simple but tensed. It’s a story between a soldier and a doctor. One who protect people by killing, while others protect people by trying to save as many lives as she can. It’s really the opposite. That’s why they met some obstacles in their relationship. Plus, Si-Jin is a soldier and he can be sent to anywhere unknown at any time and has a chance of not coming back. The story is beautifully told and packed. Simple but enjoyable. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Korean drama about military and medical story combined. That’s why Descendants of the Sun is so special. It’s different from any other Korean dramas that you’ve ever seen before.

The actions scenes in Descendants of the Sun are really great actually. They are all tensed and will make you can’t take your eyes off of the scene. Si-jin, of course, took part of making the action more enjoyable. He is very cool to the point that I can’t even find words to describe him. He is very good at body fighting and even at gun shooting. He is a total package, seriously. Joong-Ki played his character without a stunt double as much as he could. To me, it is awesome. There is a scene where Si-Jin ran to catch some bad guys and he ended up sliding through on top of a car. That scene is so cool! Their famous fist bump is also looked really cute. It’s become pretty iconic.

And when Si-Jin flipped Mo-Yeon’s phone and caught it easily. That scene also makes him look so cool too. There are many other scenes that are so cool and awesome. They are mind-blowing and jaw-dropping. Exaggerating, perhaps. But I am not kidding and I don’t think it’s exaggerating either.

What I like about this drama is that they didn’t only give us action, romance, and melodrama. They also gave us many comedies. Many of the scenes are very funny that you will literally laugh out loud. Not ridiculous, just funny. This drama is really fun and enjoyable to watch. When things get serious, they can suddenly make us laugh so loud and vice versa. There are some minor confusions about the timeline, but I think we can all overlook that. The English accent spoken by the Koreans are not as good as I was hoping for but I guess it’s okay and doesn’t make the story less interesting anyway. Not only Descendants of the Sun has given us many entertaining experiences, this drama also has taught us so much, especially about our dedication to the work that we have chosen. It is touching and inspiring.

Not only Yoo Si-jin and Kang Mo-Yeon’s love story, Seo Dae-Young and Yoon Myeong-Joo’s love story is also interesting, though mostly heartbreaking, they really make a good and cute couple. I do like the progress of their relationship. Jin Goo and Kim Ji-Woon have portrayed their characters really well. Even though their love story is mostly overlooked because of Si-Jin and Mo-Yeon’s love story, but they did a very well done job to make the chemistry felt real to the audiences. Jin Goo and Kim Ji-Woon can also make their characters not only serious but can also be funny at other times. Both characters really make the story Descendants of the Sun more interesting. The character of Seo Dae-Young is interesting. He looks so serious like all the time but he’s actually pretty much funny. He’s different from Yoo Si-Jin who loves to joke around and smile, Seo Dae-Young didn’t really smile that easily. However, his character is actually pretty innocent and kind and funny. His love story with Yoon Myeong-Joo is also intriguing. Although to be honest, I always prefer the character of Yoo Si-Jin. He really is a perfect ideal man. I don’t think such man exists. Even if he does, I bet it’s going to be hard to find the same exact man like Si-Jin. I love it whenever Si-Jin looked at Mo-Yeon. We can actually feel his love and care towards her. We know that he really loves her and vice versa. It’s like Song Joong-Ki and Song Hye-Kyo are the real-life couple because their chemistry on the set is so perfect and real Song Joong-Ki is really good at playing the character of Yoo Si-Jin. I don’t know how many times I have to say it because seriously, he’s just too amazing. After all these years, Song Hye-Kyo’s acting skill is still looking great as well.

Aside from the love story, the friendship between Captain Yoo Si-Jin and Sergeant Major Seo Dae-Young is something you want to see as well. Although Si-Jin is the captain and Dae-Young’s position is beneath him, they actually made a great combination. They trust each other’s back and can rely on each other every time. Plus, when they are not in a serious situation, they are very funny together. Forget about their ranks, they really are what we called friendship goals. When they have to act tough, they’ll do it but when they are outside the army, they were like other normal people with good sense of humour. I also like the relationship between Yoo Si-Jin and his Alpha Team members. There are five members of the team and each of them has their own nickname. Yoo Si-Jin is called Big Boss, while Seo Dae-Young is called Wolf. The other member is Snoopy, Harry Potter, and Piccolo. Although the other member doesn’t take much air time, but when they did, they all did a great job. Either acting or doing action scenes, they really nailed it. Not to mention, they can be really funny as well. Alpha Team is really the best team. Kim Min-Seok who played the character of Private First Class Kim Ki-Bum is also someone who needed to be reckoned with. With his good acting skill, Kim Min-Seok managed to add some laughter to the audience in portraying his character.

The other cast also has done a great job in portraying their characters. From soldiers to doctors, they did it really well. Because their actings are so good, the story from this drama can run perfectly, thus making the overall plot story perfect. Medical terms may not be as many as doctors films or dramas but they still managed to do medical stuff really well. As for the soldiers, well, their stunts and actions are all perfectly done. The actions are tensed and exciting, very intriguing indeed. Plus, very entertaining as well. The violence is not so cruel or bloody like other war films, but it still enough to make your heart beats faster and make you feel tense.

“Soldiers always live with a shroud on. When they die in a nameless land for the sake of their country, the place of their death become their grave and their uniform become their shroud. This should be every soldier’s mindset every time they put down their uniform. Therefore, be honorable at every moment–there’s no reason to fall short.”Captain Yoo Si-Jin

Other things that I like in the drama is the iconic dolls. The fox and the rabbit in army suits. They are very very cute and adorable, especially the fox which represents Si-Jin. I really want to have one. It looks comforting when I look Mo-Yeon’s hugging it. Anyway, I kind of getting off topic now, so let me get back to it again. Descendants of the Sun is an excellent drama. Not only this drama has a great cast, but also the settings are very well set. From the hospital to the battlefield, to the army camp, everything is set perfectly. Even the scenes were all taken in a very good angle. We would see some beautiful places as well that add a plus point to this drama. The makeup and the clothing are all perfectly synchronised to the story and perfectly thought. The production team really paid attention to every single detail even the smallest detail, such as the wound, the clothes, the places, and other equipment. This Korean drama is perfect.

Descendants of the Sun is indeed deserved to be talked about all the time. Now I understand why it’s so popular. Joong-Ki took most of the part, like really really most of it. Since most of the audience is girls and women, I am not surprised that this drama has become so popular. Song Joong-Ki really is very handsome. But that’s not all. He’s also a very skill and talented actor. He has proven us that he is not just a handsome face but also a great actor. His charisma in this drama is so perfect that will melt every girl’s and woman’s heart. And Song Hye-Kyo still showed her best performance and made this drama succeed as well. Overall, Descendants of the Sun is a great drama with great stories like nothing else that you’ve ever seen before along with a great cast as well. This drama was executed really well, thus it’s no wonder that this drama is so sensational and success.

Descendants of the Sun receives 10 out of 10 stars from me. I am a fan!

  1. […] While Descendants of the Sun (2016) is mainly more cheerful and more action and more heroic, this story of this series is sweeter in a matter of small actions. While Descendants of the Sun gives us many romance, many comedy, and many heroic and medical action, That Winter, the Wind Blows gives us more romance and drama. It’s romantic and sweet. The small actions by Oh Soo towards Oh Young are just sweet and very gentleman, while Si-Jin looks more of heroic since he’s a soldier, but he did do sweet actions too towards Mo-Yeon. Both dramas are very different that you can’t even possibly compare them. That Winter, the Wind Blows will make you shed some tears and also make you smile. It’s that good. I think it’s mostly because Jo In-Sung and Song Hye-Kyo are both great actor and actress that we can actually feel what their characters feel and their emotions. You can cry just because you see them crying. Jo In-Sung really has his charisma, while Song Hye-Kyo is always as beautiful as ever. After a few years didn’t do any TV dramas, she came back with this amazing role. She really knows how to pick a role. Same goes to Jo In-Sung, even though I have never watched any of his drama before. Both Jo In-Sung and Song Hye-Kyo are just superb. Jo In-Sung even didn’t afraid to cry a lot in this series. He cried naturally and so did Song Hye-Kyo. […]
