synopsis

Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) arrives at Port Royal in the Caribbean without a ship or crew. His timing is inopportune, however, because later that evening the town is besieged by a pirate ship. The pirates kidnap the governor’s daughter, Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), who’s in possession of a valuable coin that is linked to a curse that has transformed the pirates into the undead. A gallant blacksmith (Orlando Bloom) in love with Elizabeth allies with Sparrow in pursuit of the pirates.

my-opinion

I think this is the first time Disney made a film with this uncommon genre, with so many gun shooting, swords fighting, and epic adventure from a ride in Disneyland. Disney hardly ever made a film about pirates, except if you count Peter Pan. Even in Peter Pan, the pirates are the villains. In Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the pirates are actually the heroes. Well, perhaps anti-hero. Not all, of course. There are bad pirates as well, but the main characters are pirates and they are good. Well, define good actually. Anyway, I first watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl on television by accident and I simply love it from the beginning. Ever since then, I really love Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Johnny Depp played the role of a naughty and a little bit crazy pirate named Captain Jack Sparrow. The ‘Captain’ must be said as well because if not, he would protest. Depp really does justice in his role. Something we can’t expect less from a top actor like him. Jack Sparrow has become an iconic and popular character ever since then and has made the name of Johnny Depp even get more attention in the film industry. Even in this role, he got nominated for Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Unfortunately, he didn’t win it. Depp really took a big part for the succession of this film. His facial expressions are just perfect. The sullen face, smiley face, confused face, any faces you named it, Depp really can pull it off.

Not only he can portray the character really well and amazing, Johnny Depp has also pulled off the British accent. I really thought he was British back then when I first this film. Yes, he is that good. Plus, this is the film that makes me fall in love with Johnny Depp. With his great acting skill, no wonder if Johnny Depp is said to be one of the most versatile actors of his day and age in Hollywood. He’s just super amazing.

“This is either madness… or brilliance.” Will Turner

Besides Depp, Orlando Bloom also took the part of making this film a success. He played the character of Will Turner, a blacksmith who then turned into a pirate. He is one of the leading roles after Jack. After succeeding in The Lord of the Rings, the talented Bloom also succeed in playing his character in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Unfortunately, Will had to always be beside Jack who is more eccentric and crazier. Therefore his character somehow was still in shadow. But that didn’t make Bloom performed less than expected. I don’t know if it’s because he used to play a character experts in weaponry or because he’s just a great actor, I think his swordsmanship is really excellent. So does Johnny Depp, apparently. But seeing Orlando Bloom using swords here and using arrows (archery) in The Lord of the Rings, it’s just epic.

“Me? I’m dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It’s the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they’re going to do something incredibly… stupid.” Captain Jack Sparrow

Anyway, the villain in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is Captain Barbossa, who is played by Geoffrey Rush. Barbossa is an evil and cunning antagonist. His character got many attentions as well because he was so cunning and smart, though apparently not as smart as Jack. Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow is really awesome and phenomenal. His character is in between of the craziest and extremely genius pirate. He may be looked ridiculous sometimes—or perhaps most of the time—but he always one step ahead of others. He is a genius in some ways. He’s just funny without doing too much effort. Just one slightest move can make the audiences laugh. Another character that also in the film is Elizabeth Swann, portrayed by Keira Knightley. Although she is a good actress, I think her performance in this film is somehow lacked something. I just can’t put a finger on what is wrong, but I know there’s something. Well, seeing she was only 18 years old when the film came out, I think Keira Knightley has already done a great job anyway. I do like the chemistry between her character and Will Turner. Orlando Bloom has definitely delivered a good expression. We can all see how much Will Turner is interested and in love with Elizabeth Swann, and vice versa as well.

Jack Sparrow may be ridiculous, but the film isn’t. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is really exciting, interesting, somehow tense with so many pirates fighting, and even has a lot of funny moments here and there. From the story line, Disney really pulled it off. There’s no other pirates story like Pirates of the Caribbean. The background song, the visual effect, the setting, the story, everything worked really well. I think this film is the one that made me fall in love with Johnny Depp. Whereas, Orlando Bloom, you don’t need to ask. I love him ever since The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (2001). Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is indeed a great film and definitely worth to watch. No scratch that. This film is a must-see film.

I seriously considered giving this film 10 stars. However, since I like Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007) even better, I decided to give Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 9.5 out of 10 stars.
